How to use the barcode scanning feature

Updated over 3 weeks ago

At List Perfectly, we understand that creating product listings can feel like a daunting task. That’s why we designed the Listing Assistant—a powerful, easy-to-use tool that takes the guesswork out of listing. Whether you’re just starting your business or have been selling for years, the Listing Assistant simplifies the process so you can spend more time growing your business and less time on tedious tasks.

Why Use the Barcode Scanning Feature?

The Listing Assistant's Barcode Scanning tool connects directly to a comprehensive database that contains millions of products. This means that with a single scan, you can:

  • Automatically retrieve accurate product details such as title, brand, size, color, material, and description.

  • Save time by eliminating manual entry and reducing the risk of errors.

  • Start with a complete and polished listing that you can customize further.

The Barcode Scanning feature works on mobile phones, desktops, and laptops—scan with your phone's camera, a webcam, or a USB scanner, or enter barcodes manually.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Using Barcode Scanning

1. Open the Add Listing Form

  • Log in to your List Perfectly account and go to your catalog.

  • Click the Add Listing button to open the form.

2. Enter the Barcode

There are two easy ways to add the product's barcode:

Option 1: Scan the Barcode

  • Use your device’s camera, a webcam, or a barcode scanner to scan the product's barcode.

  • The barcode will automatically populate in the form.

  • Barcode Scanning from Mobile

Option 2: Manually Enter the Barcode

  • If scanning isn’t an option, simply type the barcode (UPC code) into the field on the form.

3. Submit the Barcode for Processing

  • Click Submit to let the Listing Assistant connect to the database.

  • The system will retrieve detailed product information, such as the title, brand, size, material, description, and more, and add it to your listing form.

4. Review and Customize the Listing

  • Once the product details are pulled in, review them for accuracy.

  • Add any missing information or unique features that make your product stand out.

  • For example, include condition details (e.g., "Like New") or extra keywords to attract more buyers.

5. Save and Publish Your Listing

  • Once you’re happy with your listing, click Save.

  • From here, you can crosslist it to your favorite marketplaces or keep it in your catalog for future use.

Pro Move: Combining Tools for Even Better Listings

Take your workflow to the next level by combining the barcode scanner with the other Listing Assistant features:

  • Image Analyzer: After scanning a barcode, upload product photos to let the Listing Assistant analyze the images and refine the listing further. It can detect colors, materials, and other details to make your listing even more robust.

  • Title Analyzer: If the database-generated title is too generic or not optimized for buyers, the Listing Assistant can analyze your product title and suggest keywords that boost search visibility.

Example Workflow:

  1. Scan the barcode to pull product details like brand, size, and description.

  2. Upload a product photo to generate additional insights, like color or style.

  3. Use the Title Analyzer to enhance your title with searchable keywords.

  4. Review and tweak the listing for a professional, high-converting result.

What If the Barcode Isn't Recognized?

If a barcode doesn’t retrieve product details, don’t worry!

  • You can manually fill in missing information, and the Listing Assistant will still guide you in creating a polished listing.

  • You can also use the Image Analyzer to identify details directly from your photos or the Title Analyzer to craft an engaging and optimized product title.

What If I Don’t Want to Use the Barcode Scanning Feature?

You can always opt out of using the Listing Assistant if you prefer manual listing creation. Simply:

  • Click List on My Own when the pop-up appears.

  • To prevent the pop-up from appearing again, uncheck the Always Show option.

If you change your mind, you can reactivate the Listing Assistant at any time by clicking its button.
